The Application Libraries (directories and sub-directories) are structures that provide a Mainframe System Model for analyst, technical administrators, testing groups and support individuals to store configuration files, programs and job scripts that support an application infra-structure. This document will focus on a directory structure for the development environment.

We have made a significant effort to ensure the documents and software technologies are correct and accurate. We reserve the right to make changes without notice at any time. The function delivered in this version is based upon the enhancement requests from a specific group of users. The intent is to provide changes as the need arises and in a timeframe that is dependent upon the availability of resources.

The following diagram shows the model sub-directory structure for the Application Libraries and the DEVELOPMENT environment. The Application Libraries are typically a sub-directory under a directory structure for a Development, Production or Test environments. Update or change capability to the Application Library structure and content may be limited to system and support individuals. Read or view access typically has a larger audience.

Note-1: This is the primary directory for the SimoTime Driver Programs and Test Cases
Note-2: This is the Development, Production or Test directory, for this example it is set to DEVL.
Note-3: Utility programs using a mainframe dialect, not part of application business functions
Note-4: Utility programs using a Micro Focus dialect, not part of application business functions
Note-5: Utility programs with specialized or unique requirements

Color Associations: The  light-green  boxes are unique to SIMOTIME Technologies using the Mainframe and Micro Focus Enterprise Server/Studio (or Micro Focus Mainframe Express). The  light-red  boxes are unique to the SIMOTIME Technologies using a Linux, UNIX or Windows System and COBOL Technologies such as Micro Focus. The  light-yellow  boxes are SIMOTIME Technologies, Third-party Technologies, decision points or program transitions in the processing logic or program generations. The  light-blue  boxes identify the input/output data structures such as Documents, Spreadsheets, Data Files, VSAM Data Sets or Relational Tables. The  light-gray  boxes identify a system function or information item.

This description will use the SimoTime Application samples that use a base directory of SIMOSAM1. The additional directories will be sub-directories under this base directory.

The SIMOSAM1\DEVL directory structure is intended to be used by programs and other individuals the support the application creation, testing and ongoing support processes.

This directory contains commands and data that provide technical administrative function. Administrative functions include the following.

1 Create a Repository of Application Properties.
2 Read the repository and create reports for member properties and counts in ASCII/Text format.
3 Read the repository and create reports for member properties and counts in HTML format.
4 Read the repository and create member lists that are used to do scripted batch BMS Generations.
5 Read the repository and create member lists that are used to do scripted batch COBOL Compilations.

This directory contains the source code for the Assembler (Mainframe HLASM) source members. The source members typically have an extension of filename.MLC.

The programs in this directory should be compiled using a mainframe dialect. The source members typically have an extension of filename.CBL.

This directory contains COBOL Source Code for programs that perform utilitarian function in support of the application but are not part of the application that delivers business function. The programs in this directory should be compiled using a Micro Focus dialect. This suite of programs uses functions and syntax that is unique to the Micro Focus compiler. The source members typically have an extension of filename.CBL.

This directory contains Java Source Code for application programs. The source members typically have an extension of filename.java, filename.jsp or filename.htm.

This directory contains the JCL Members that are submitted to and executed by the Micro Focus Server. The JCL Members (Job Control Language) are used to define a batch job consisting of a single job step or multiple job steps. The mapping of the physical file names to the Data Set Name (DSN) and DD name (file name used by program) is done within the JCL Member.

This directory contains JCL INCLUDE members. The content of an include member is used to replace an INCLUDE statement in the Primary JCL member. The included JCL statements are then processed with the submitted JCL stream of statements.

This directory contains the control file (sometimes referred to as control cards) for the programs used by the applications. An example would be a control file that contains the sort specifications used by the Micro Focus SORT program.

This document will focus on a directory structure for the development environment. This document may be used to assist as a tutorial for new programmers or as a quick reference for experienced programmers.

In the world of programming there are many ways to solve a problem. This document and the links to other documents are intended to provide a greater awareness of the Data Management and Application Processing alternatives.

The documentation and software were developed and tested on systems that are configured for a SIMOTIME environment based on the hardware, operating systems, user requirements and security requirements. Therefore, adjustments may be needed to execute the jobs and programs when transferred to a system of a different architecture or configuration.
