The SORT Program Create an Empty KSDS Cluster |
![]() |
| The SimoTime Home Page |
This suite of programs will describe how to use the Micro Focus SORT program and a Windows command file to create an empty Key-Sequenced-Data-Set (or VSAM, KSDS>. This function is similar to the DELETE/DEFINE function of IDCAMS. Two sample JCL members are included that describe how to create a VSAM cluster using JCL on a Mainframe System with ZOS or a Linux, UNIX or Windows System with Micro Focus.
Note: Micro Focus provides support for a Job Entry System (JES) that uses Job Control Language (JCL) along with a set of utility programs for managing a batch environment that accesses relational data tables, traditional file structures and VSAM data sets.
Therefore, it is not necessary to convert JCL to another job scripting language (i.e. Windows command files) when migrating a batch application from a Mainframe Systems to a Windows System using Micro Focus.
However, if you have a utilitarian program that you want to run outside a server that is configured for mainframe sub-system support this would be a viable approach for creating an empty KSDS.
Refer to the Technical Details section of this document for details about things to consider for a JCL conversion and JES replacement.
The Windows Command Files, Control Files and documentation are provided in a single zipped file called SRTKSD01.ZIP. This zipped file may be downloaded from the SimoTime Web site. In the Windows environment the files and source member names have file extensions.
We have made a significant effort to ensure the documents and software technologies are correct and accurate. We reserve the right to make changes without notice at any time. The function delivered in this version is based upon the enhancement requests from a specific group of users. The intent is to provide changes as the need arises and in a timeframe that is dependent upon the availability of resources.

When migrating a batch application from a Mainframe System to a Linux, UNIX or Windows System our first choice would be to stick with JCL for the following reasons. Depending on the customers use of JCL this could be a major conversion.
Possible items that need to be considered are as follows.
| 1. | GDG usage, conversion and support. |
| 2. | The usage, conversion and support of Concatenated Data Sets. |
| 3. | In-stream Data |
| 4. | Parameter substitution |
| 5. | PDS usage and support |
| 6. | JCL PROC’s and INCLUDES |
| 7. | Overrides in PROC’s |
| 8. | Use of Spooling (SYSOUT=*), etc… |
| 9. | Use of INTRDR |
| 10. | Use of EXEC CICS SPOOL |
| 11. | Use of conditional processing |
| 12. | Parameter passing using SYSPARM and/or SYSIN |
In addition to a JCL conversion it is important to consider the following, “Micro Focus provides a JES Sub-System with spooling, catalog, utilities, batch resource allocation and management.” To manage a system the loss of the JES functionality may be an even bigger challenge. The JES spooling information is quite often used as an audit trail and information may be extracted for charge backs and billing purposes. This is a much bigger task than converting JCL members to another scripting language.
The Micro Focus JES Mainframe Sub System supplies the following utility programs.
| 1. | DFSORT,ICEMAN,SYNCSORT and SORT, to perform sort/merge operations |
| 2. | DSNTEP2, to execute any SQL statement that can be executed dynamically |
| 3. | IDCAMS, to manage VSAM data sets among others |
| 4. | IEBCOMPR to compare two sequential or partitioned data sets |
| 5. | IEBCOPY, to copy or merge partitioned data sets |
| 6. | IEBGENER, to copy sequential data sets |
| 7. | IEBUPDTE, to create or modify sequential or partitioned data sets |
| 8. | IEFBR14, to provide a dummy program facility by simply returning to the caller |
| 9. | IKJEFT01, IKJEFT1A, IKJEFT1B to submit TSO commands in batch mode |
| 10. | IRXJCL, to run a REXX exec in MVS batch mode |
| 11. | IEBDG, to create test data |
| 12. | and more… |
The purpose of this suite of programs is to provide examples for sorting files in a Mainframe environment or a Windows environment using Micro Focus technologies. This document may be used to assist as a tutorial for new programmers or as a quick reference for experienced programmers.
In the world of programming there are many ways to solve a problem. This documentation and software were developed and tested on systems that are configured for a SIMOTIME environment based on the hardware, operating systems, user requirements and security requirements. Therefore, adjustments may be needed to execute the jobs and programs when transferred to a system of a different architecture or configuration.
SIMOTIME Services has experience in moving or sharing data or application processing across a variety of systems. For additional information about SIMOTIME Services or Technologies please contact us using the information in the Contact or Feedback section of this document.

SimoTime Technologies was founded in 1987 and is a privately owned company. We specialize in the creation and deployment of business applications using new or existing technologies and services. We have a team of individuals that understand the broad range of technologies being used in today's environments. Our customers include small businesses using Internet technologies to corporations using very large mainframe systems.
Quite often, to reach larger markets or provide a higher level of service to existing customers it requires the newer Internet technologies to work in a complementary manner with existing corporate mainframe systems. We specialize in preparing applications and the associated data that are currently residing on a single platform to be distributed across a variety of platforms.
Preparing the application programs will require the transfer of source members that will be compiled and deployed on the target platform. The data will need to be transferred between the systems and may need to be converted and validated at various stages within the process. SimoTime has the technology, services and experience to assist in the application and data management tasks involved with doing business in a multi-system environment.
Whether you want to use the Internet to expand into new market segments or as a delivery vehicle for existing business functions simply give us a call or check the web site at http://www.simotime.com
