This (CV80ERAR.cbl) program is one in a series of programs that will convert the file format and record content for files with records containing 80 byte logical records. These files are commonly referred to as card files or control files. This reference is based on an historical beginning that used 80 column cards and small decks of cards that contained control information. This information was used to determine the behavior of a utility program or user written program.

This program will convert an EBCDIC-encoded, Record Sequential file of 80 byte logical records to an ASCII-encoded, Record Sequential file of 80 byte physical records.
Note: The term "Line Sequential" is used to refer to an ASCII-Text file. The term "Record Sequential" is used to refer to a file that contains concatenated records of a predefined record length.
The CV80ERAR program reads a Record Sequential File (GETRS080) and writes to a Record Sequential File (PUTRS080). Prior to executing the program the logical file names used in the program should be mapped to the actual physical file names,
Note: The file format is maintained as a Record Sequential file of eighty byte, fixed length records with trailing space characters. The logical record content is changed. The EBCDIC encoded records from the input file are converted to ASCII encoding and written to the output file.
The following (ERAR80E1.cmd) is a sample command file that uses two "SET" statements to map the file names and then runs the CV80ERAR program.

This program will convert an EBCDIC-encoded, Record Sequential file of 80 byte logical records to an ASCII-encoded, Record Sequential file of 80 byte physical records. This document may be used to assist as a tutorial for new programmers or as a quick reference for experienced programmers.
